“Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands” (Elliott Smith)

Everybody cares, everybody understands
Yes, everybody cares about you
Yeah and whether or not you want them to

It’s a chemical embrace that kicks you in the head
To a pure synthetic sympathy that infuriates you totally
And a quiet lie that makes you wanna scream and shout

So here I lay dreaming looking at the brilliant sun
Raining, it’s guiding light upon everyone

For a moment’s rest you can lean against the banister
After running upstairs again and again
From wherever they came to fix you in
But always fear city’s finest follow right behind

You got a pretty vision in your head
A pencil full of poison lead
And a sickened smile illegal in every town

So here I lay dreaming looking at the brilliant sun
Raining, it’s guiding light upon everyone
Here I lay dreaming looking at the brilliant sun
Raining, it’s guiding light upon everyone

You say you mean well, you don’t know what you mean
You fucking ought to stay the hell away
From things you know nothing about

“Black” (Norah Jones & Danger Mouse)

We touch the walls of a city streets, and
Didn’t explain
Sadly showed us our ways
Of never asking why
Cast down,
It was heaven sent, and
To the church no intent to repent
On my knees, just to cry
Until you travel to that place you can’t come back
Where the last pain is gone and all that’s left is black
Bright nights cease coming to me, and
Some day
They’ll punish my deeds, and they’ll find
All the crimes
But then they ask when they going to see them
Then they’re going to
Ask to feel the ghosts, the walls, the dreams
Oh, I’ve got mine
At last those coming came and they never looked back
With blinding stars in their eyes but all they saw was black
Fooled them, hoping to seem
Like the slayer of evil,
But the product of greed, and
It’s not a mask, so be honest with me
They can’t afford to ignore that I’m a disease
Practical, since we had to be, and
When they were old they came back to me
And they tried, oh they tried
And when you follow through and wind up on your back
Looking up at no stars in the sky those white clouds have turned it black

“What Is & What Should Never Be” (Led Zeppelin)

And if I say to you tomorrow
Take my hand, child, come with me
It’s to a castle I will take you
Where what’s to be, they say will be

And catch the wind, see us spin
Sail away, leave the day
Way up high in the sky
and whoa the wind won’t blow, we really shouldn’t go
It only goes to show that you will be mine, by takin’ our time
Oooh, ho-whoa

And if you say to me tomorrow
Oh, what fun it all would be
then what’s to stop us, pretty baby
but what is and what should never be

And catch the wind, see us spin
Sail away, leave the day
Way up high in the sky
and whoa the wind won’t blow, we really shouldn’t go
It only goes to show that you will be mine, by takin’ our time
Oooh, ho-whoa

So if you wake up with the sunrise
and all your dreams are still as new
and happiness is what you need so bad
Well, girl, the answer live with you, yeah

And catch the wind, see us spin
Sail away, leave the day
Way up high in the sky
and whoa the wind won’t blow, we really shouldn’t go
It only goes to show that you will be mine, by takin’ our time
Oooh, ho-whoa

Hey, ho
And well, the wind won’t blow, and we really shouldn’t go
and it only goes to show-whoa-whoa-whoa
Grab the wind, we’re gonna see us spin
We’re gonna sail, little girl
A-do-do-do, ba-ba-n-do, oh
Ma, ma, ma, ma, ma, ma, yeah
Everybody I know seems to know me well
but does anybody know I’m gonna move like hell
A-baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, ho, I love ya
Baby, baby, babe, huh, oh, I love ya
Do, no, no, no, no, no, no, come on, now
I want you

The Production of Monsters

The Not Me

george-rodger-empire-state-building-observatory-800x800In 1977, my grandparents took me and my sisters to the top of the Empire State Building. I can remember being annoyed by all the waiting in line just to ride the elevator to the observation floor. We probably spent more time waiting to board that elevator than we spent viewing the view. Still, when our turn came around and after the elevator finally reached the 102nd floor, I burst out of the doors to see what all the fuss was about.

At first, I was too distracted with taking in the view to notice that my grandpa was not with me. When I turned back to search for him, I saw that he had parked himself close to the elevators away from the windows and the view. I called to him, “Grandpa, you gotta come see this.” “No thanks,” he replied “I’m good here.” “Pretty please,” I pleaded. This time he…

“I Fought the Law” (The Clash)

Breakin’ rocks in the hot sun
I fought the law and the law won
I fought the law and the law won
I needed money ’cause I had none
I fought the law and the law won
I fought the law and the law won

I left my baby and it feels so bad
Guess my race is run
She’s the best girl that I ever had
I fought the law and the law won
I fought the law and the

Robbin’ people with a six-gun
I fought the law and the law won
I fought the law and the law won
I lost my girl and I lost my fun
I fought the law and the law won
I fought the law and the law won

I left my baby and it feels so bad
I guess my race is run
She’s the best girl that I ever had
I fought the law and the law won
I fought the law and the law won…

A desk of one’s own

Typewriter

ten million hardbacks

Writer Erinna Mettler sparked my interest this week with her post on ‘Desk Envy’. A desk is such a fundamental part of a writer’s equipment, yet so difficult to perfect, it is no wonder that there are thousands of pictures like the ones of famous writers’ workplaces in the post which can inspire the green-eyed-monster. Space in the home is at such a premium – certainly in the UK, even more so in Japan – that for most of us the dream of a quiet room with a huge desk covered with piles of essential writerly clutter and (crucially!) all of one’s own must remain unindulged.

Still, we can dream. I was lucky enough to spend some time in the Lake District recently, with hints of spring breaking through the winter gloom all around. The hotel had this lovely number sitting in a corridor seemingly unused and unloved, except by…

“Rebellion (Lies)” (Arcade Fire)

Sleeping is giving in, no matter what the time is
Sleeping is giving in, so lift those heavy eyelids
People say that you’ll die, faster than without water
But we know it’s just a lie, scare your son, scare your daughter

People say that your dreams are the only things that save you
Come on baby in our dreams, we can live our misbehavior

Every time you close your eyes
(Lies, lies)
Every time you close your eyes
(Lies, lies)
Every time you close your eyes
(Lies, lies)
Every time you close your eyes
(Lies, lies)

Every time you close your eyes
Every time you close your eyes
Every time you close your eyes
Every time you close your eyes

The Meaning of Happiness

Cold

storm and merry go roundMy youngest daughter, Josephine, had a birthday this past Friday the 13th.

At seven, she is dreamy, funny, contemplative and just delighted with herself. Typical of her age cohort, she tore apart her wrapping paper with a fiendish glee, strutted around in her brand new mermaid tail (though she has her doubts that mermaids actually exist, she still holds out hope that she can become one, say, as a career or lifestyle choice), and spent half the day talking to herself in the mirror as she is apt to do.

It was during one of these mirror episodes that she turned to me suddenly and said, “Mom, was the day I was born just the happiest day of your life?”

Huh.

It was not.

The day of her birth and the subsequent few years were by most standards pretty horrible, in fact. Not post-apocalyptic horrible, but bad enough so that…

“Heroes” (David Bowie)

I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can beat them, just for one day
We can be Heroes, just for one day

And you, you can be mean
And I, I’ll drink all the time
‘Cause we’re lovers, and that is a fact
Yes we’re lovers, and that is that

Though nothing, will keep us together
We could steal time,
just for one day
We can be Heroes, for ever and ever
What d’you say?

I, I wish you could swim
Like the dolphins, like dolphins can swim
Though nothing,
nothing will keep us together
We can beat them, for ever and ever
Oh we can be Heroes,
just for one day

I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can be Heroes, just for one day
We can be us, just for one day

I, I can remember (I remember)
Standing, by the wall (by the wall)
And the guns shot above our heads
(over our heads)
And we kissed,
as though nothing could fall
(nothing could fall)
And the shame was on the other side
Oh we can beat them, for ever and ever
Then we could be Heroes,
just for one day

We can be Heroes
We can be Heroes
We can be Heroes
Just for one day
We can be Heroes

We’re nothing, and nothing will help us
Maybe we’re lying,
then you better not stay
But we could be safer,
just for one day
